Track construction material price changes, line by line

Compare a supplier's old and new materials quote, or bids from several suppliers for the same job. See exactly what changed and by how much — evidence for a re-bid or escalation conversation, with nothing uploaded to run the comparison.

Why material price moves are easy to lose track of

  • A material price change that looked small per unit compounds fast once it's multiplied across a full order quantity for a job.
  • Escalation clauses and re-bid conversations need the exact per-line evidence of what changed and when — not a general sense that "prices went up".
  • A supplier's updated quote covering dozens of materials, each with its own unit of measure (bag, length, sheet, roll, ton), is slow and error-prone to check line by line by hand.

Try it with a sample materials list

A fictional 12-line sample covering cement, rebar, lumber, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, roofing, and aggregate — previous and current cost side by side, the way a supplier re-quote typically lands. Download it and drop it straight into a comparison, or use it to see the column structure before mapping your own file.

Old vs. new: evidence for a re-bid or escalation clause

When a supplier sends an updated quote, Price Change compares it against the previous one and shows every material that went up, went down, was added, or was dropped. That per-line record — not a general sense that costs rose — is what an escalation-clause conversation or a re-bid review actually needs.

For quantifying what an increase does to margin on a priced job, see supplier price increase and the margin impact calculator.

Comparing multiple supplier bids for the same job

Sourcing the same materials list from two or three suppliers means lining up separate quotes with different layouts and item codes. Supplier Comparison does that matching and shows the cheapest supplier per line, plus how much of the list each one actually covers — see procurement price comparison for the formal-bid version of this workflow, or comparing two supplier price lists to see the method by hand first.

How each line is classified

Comparable
At least two suppliers quoted the material at a usable price, so a lowest-price winner is shown.
Single offer
Only one supplier quoted the material — there's nothing to compare it against, so no winner is declared.
Currency or unit mismatch
Suppliers quoted the same material in different currencies or units of measure. CostRift does not convert either, so no winner is shown for that line.
Needs review
A duplicate or ambiguous line in one supplier's quote — left unresolved for you to check rather than guessed.

What this isn't

CostRift compares supplier material prices per line — it is not a full construction project-cost or project-operations platform. It doesn't manage your schedule, bids, subcontractors, or overall job costing; it gives you the clean, per-line price evidence those bigger systems and conversations still depend on.

Frequently asked questions

Can CostRift track material price escalation over multiple rounds of quotes?

Price Change compares one supplier's previous and current price list and shows what moved. Each new round is its own comparison — CostRift doesn't currently chart a multi-round trend line across more than two lists at once, so for a running record you'd compare each new quote against the one before it.

Is this a construction project-cost or project-management platform?

No. CostRift compares supplier material prices — old vs. new, or supplier vs. supplier, per line item. It isn't a bid-management, scheduling, or full project-cost platform; it's the price-comparison step those bigger systems still need a clean input for.

Can I compare bids from multiple material suppliers for the same job?

Yes. Supplier Comparison accepts a quote file from each supplier bidding the same materials list and shows the cheapest per line plus how much of the list each supplier actually covers.

Does CostRift handle different units of measure, like a bag vs. a ton?

CostRift compares the unit cost column you map as-is — it does not convert between units of measure. If two suppliers quote the same material in different units (a bag price vs. a per-ton price), that line is flagged as a unit mismatch rather than silently compared.

Are my suppliers' quote files uploaded anywhere?

No. Files are read and compared in your browser and are not sent to CostRift servers to run the comparison. No account is required to try it.
